OFF TO A GREAT START!

Congratulations to every member of the Area VI Young Riders for making 2008 a record-breaking year for membership! Your participation and enthusiasm in the program has been instrumental to our success. The administrative Young Rider team is very proud of all of you! Keep up the good work!

Team Challenges

Congrats to our team challenge winners. Our first of 2008 was held at 3-Day Ranch where all of our team challenge members received a fancy 1st and 2nd place neck sash. In addition, the 1st place team members each received "Antares" open-front leather boots that are valued at more then $300.00. WOW!!!
Galway Downs at the end of March was our second team challenge where 1st and 2nd place teams received their sashes and the 1st place team members received "Antares" leather halters valued at $230.00.
The third team challenge was held at Twin rives this April. Due to an unfortunate accident our "Antares" representative, Kevin Kress, suffered a back injury that has put him out of commission for the next three months. Our ribbons and prizes have been delayed a few weeks, however they will be mailed to you shortly. We are putting together a Thank You poster to "Antares" and Kevin for their generosity and would like all of our Team Challenge Winners to forward any pictures you may have to me at tsmitheventing@aol.com.

NAJYRC

We have amazing candidates that are striving to compete at Championships this summer. Our Area VI Team Candidates are considered the most competitive in the country! Come get to know your Candidates at Woodside this May. We will be displaying portfolios at the Young Rider booth. Competing at the North American Junior Young Rider Championships is an enormous accomplishment. It is considered the "Junior Olympics". Let's support our Area VI Team and help them get to Championships. You ask "How"? You can give a cash donation, purchase something from our Silent Auction this May at Woodside, contact people you know that might be interested in giving a tax-deductible donation, or product donation for our silent auction. Proceeds from this silent auction will go directly to the Team Travel Fund.

We have seven two-star candidates and seven one-star candidates. With each portfolio, other YRs, parents, trainers, and spectators will get to know them. Many of you who aspire to go to NAJYRC someday can get to know the candidates and what you have to do to get there. Also, at YR camp is another place to get to know the candidates as they will all be there having training sessions, which, if you go, you can observe. We are really excited about the phenomenal success our candidates are having at the competitions thus far in the 2008 season.

YOUNG RIDER REPRESENTATIVE

If you have not heard, Max McManamy is your new representative. She is your Advocate! If you have any suggestions or ideas as a young rider she can present your ideas to the Young Rider Committee to help improve our program! Max can be reached at 805-835-8222 or email @ kweenofhearts97@aol.com. Max's first fantastic idea as your rider rep was the YR Hoe Down at Twin Rivers in April. Read more about this fun and profitable event under fundraising.

Camp

Area VI Young Rider Camp is renowned for the outstanding training opportunities offered each year. 2008 promises to be better than ever, with an impressive list of trainers (Derek di Grazia, Bea di Grazia, John Camlin & Lynn Roberts-Johnson.) In addition, Shannon Lilley will be coordinating fun, educational activities and the visit to the waterpark each afternoon will be a most welcome chance to cool off & relax.
Applications are being accepted now. Don't miss the May 31st deadline. There is a huge discount for "members in good standing." Do you qualify? Have you completed your 8 volunteer hours & sent those records to Ellen? If so, the camp entry fee is $550.00. If not, it will be $800.00. What are you waiting for? If you need help arranging volunteer hours contact Ellen right away. asihome@silcom.com or 805-646-9994.

FUNDRAISING

This has been a busy year with wide-spread participation in our fundraising projects such as Pancake Breakfast and Rent-A-Young Rider. Unlike the Woodside silent auction, the rest of YRs fundraising projects benefit the whole YR membership. The large discount offered for camp is a good example of such benefit.

Pancake Breakfast

We have had great success with the pancake breakfasts! Your participation has been fantastic. THANK YOU! And THANK YOU to DAWN BENSON for organizing and running this event! We still have the following breakfasts left for the year. They are:

Woodside May 23-25

Woodside August 8-10

Twin Rivers September 26-28

Galway Downs October 30 Nov 2

Many of you have made a real effort to help out at these breakfasts, sometimes pitching in as you have a few moments here & there during these busy mornings. Be sure to notify Ellen of your hours donated.

YR HOE DOWN

The "YR Hoe Down" was the ingenious idea of your YR Rep Max and was a Barbecue on Friday night at Twin Rivers. THANK YOU MAX AND CHRISTIE (Max's mom) for bringing everyone together and raising money. It was a huge success and the participation from our YR's and their parents was appreciated. Thank you to all of you who helped and come to show your support.

SILENT AUCTION AT WOODSIDE

We are going to have a YR Silent Auction at Woodside in May. This is pretty short notice so we need all the help we can get. Proceeds from this auction will go straight to a travel fund for the 2008 NAJYRC teams. Let's all pitch in and help get these YRs to Colorado.

Margie Molloy is heading up the silent auction and she is asking all the trainers in Area VI to put together baskets to auction for this travel fund. Please tell your trainers about this great opportunity to help the Area VI teams reach Colorado! Margie can be contacted at mmolly@3dayranch.com or 714-342-0040. All ideas and help are needed and appreciated.

Hula Hoop & Limbo

That's right, here's your big chance to show your hidden talents. YRs is hosting a Hula Hoop & Limbo contest during the Sat. competitor's party at the Woodside event in May. So dust off those hoops, get those hips swinging and come join the fun. Dayna Lynd-Pugh is coordinating this if you have any questions.

The 2008 season has been amazing and it has been great getting to know all of you. I'm very excited to be a part of our Area VI Young Rider program and look forward to a record breaking 2008 season.

Thanks, Tamra Smith
